The program

What is SR&ED?

The Scientific Research and Experimental Development program is a federal tax incentive administered by the Canada Revenue Agency. It encourages businesses of all sizes to carry out research and development in Canada.

What qualifies

Work that tries to resolve a scientific or technological uncertainty through systematic investigation or experimentation. It often happens in the everyday course of building new products, processes or materials — not only in a lab.

What can be claimed

Eligible expenditures can include the salaries of the people doing the work, materials consumed in experimentation, and qualifying contract work performed in Canada.

How the benefit works

Claims earn investment tax credits that reduce taxes payable. Many Canadian-controlled private corporations can receive part of their credits as a cash refund, and provincial credits may also apply.

Services

End-to-end SR&ED claim support

From the first eligibility conversation to a review by the CRA, we handle the technical and financial work of your claim.

Eligibility assessment

We review your projects with your technical team to identify the work most likely to qualify — and tell you plainly where a claim isn’t worth pursuing.

Technical project descriptions

We interview the people who did the work and write clear technical narratives describing the uncertainties, the experimentation and the advancements achieved.

Financial claim preparation

We identify eligible labour, materials and contract costs, prepare the supporting calculations and complete the SR&ED claim forms for filing with your tax return.

Documentation practices

We help you put simple, year-round record-keeping in place, so evidence of your R&D is captured as the work happens rather than reconstructed later.

CRA review support

If the Canada Revenue Agency reviews your claim, we prepare you for the review, organize the supporting evidence and take part in meetings with the reviewers.

Provincial R&D credits

Where your province offers its own research and development incentives, we include them in your claim strategy.

FAQ

Common questions

Don’t see your question here? Ask us through the contact form below.

How do we know if our work qualifies?

If your team faced technical problems that couldn’t be solved with standard practice or readily available knowledge, and worked through them by testing and iterating, some of that work may qualify. An eligibility review is the most reliable way to find out.

Does our company need to be profitable to benefit?

Not necessarily. Many Canadian-controlled private corporations can receive part of their SR&ED credits as a refund even without taxable income. The outcome depends on your corporate structure and circumstances.

Is there a deadline to file?

Yes. SR&ED claims must be filed within a fixed period after the end of your tax year, and late claims are not accepted. We track your deadlines so nothing is missed.

What records will we need?

Usually project records such as plans, test results, design notes, code history or lab notebooks, along with payroll and cost information. We’ll tell you exactly what is useful for your claim.

Do you work with our accountant?

Yes. We coordinate with your accountant so the SR&ED claim fits smoothly into your corporate tax filing.
